LA LANTERNA DELLA BEATA MARIA DOMENICA
“e se ti prodighi per gli affamati e soddisfi i bisogni degli oppressi, allora la tua luce sorgerà nelle tenebre e la tua notte diventerà come il mezzogiorno”. Isaia 58,10
Durante la mia prima visita alle Suore Camilliane a Kingsville molti anni fa, le suore mi avevano regalato una statua della Beata Maria Domenica. Era una bella statua della Beata Maria Domenica Brun Barbantini che regge una lanterna in una mano mentre l’altra è protesa. I suoi piedi implicano che è in movimento. Ma ciò che ha davvero attirato la mia attenzione è la piccola lanterna che aveva in mano. In realtà quella volta mi sono chiesta perché lo tenesse in mano.
Leggendo la biografia della beata Maria Domenica ho potuto capire il significato della lanterna che teneva in mano. È stata la compagna costante della Beata Domenica mentre andava a prendersi cura dei malati poveri e soli, degli abbandonati e dei moribondi. Nei vicoli e nelle strade buie, la sua lanterna illuminava il suo cammino verso i bisognosi. C’era questa bellissima scena nella sua vita in cui durante una notte di tempesta, mentre andava a visitare un malato, la luce della sua lanterna era stata spenta dal forte vento. Era molto buio ma lei continuò per la sua strada. Il suo ardente desiderio di servire Gesù nella persona dei malati è più grande del buio della strada. Riuscì a raggiungere il luogo e ad assistere il malato nonostante fosse completamente fradicia a causa della pioggia.
Miei carissimi fratelli devoti e figli della beata Maria Domenica, le letture che abbiamo in questa V domenica del tempo ordinario ci mostrano chiaramente le opere alle quali la beata Domenica ha dedicato la sua vita rispondendo all’invito di Gesù ad essere il sale e la luce della terra. Anche lei ci invita, nella nostra capacita’ e come suoi figli, a rispondere anche noi alla chiamata di Gesù. Nel nostro Battesimo abbiamo ricevuto la luce di Cristo. Come la Beata Maria Domenica, anche noi portiamo tra le mani una lanterna e andiamo nel mondo a far risplendere quella luce nelle strade che percorriamo oscurate dall’indifferenza al grido dei poveri, dei sofferenti e degli afflitti. Ci possono essere momenti in cui la nostra lanterna si affievolisce o la sua luce viene spenta a causa della stanchezza, ma come la Beata Maria Domenica non dobbiamo perdere la speranza, ma che i nostri cuori con il desiderio ardente di servire Gesù riaccendano quella lanterna per illuminare la nostra strada.
Consentitemi di concludere questa riflessione con le parole che il sacerdote ci ha detto durante l’accensione della candela nel nostro battesimo: “Al tuo battesimo ti è stata data la fiamma di Gesù Cristo. Devi camminare sempre come un figlio della luce. Possa tu mantenere viva la fiamma della fede nel tuo cuore. Quando il Signore verrà, vai ad incontrare Lui con tutti i santi del regno dei cieli». Ci sia data la grazia di essere degni in quel giorno, con le nostre lanterne ben accese nelle nostre mani, di incontrare Gesù e la beata Maria Domenica Brun Barbantini che ci accolgono gioiosamente nel regno dei cieli. Amen!

THE LANTERN OF BLESSED MARIA DOMENICA
“ and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.” Isaiah 58:10
On my first visit to the Camillian Sisters in Kingsville many years ago, the sisters had gifted me with a statue of Blessed Maria Domenica. It was a beautiful statue of Blessed Maria Domenica Brun Barbantini holding a lantern on one hand while the other is outstretched. Her feet implying that she’s on the go. But what really caught my attention is the little lantern she was holding. It actually made me wonder that time why she was holding it.
As I read the biography of Blessed Maria Domenica, I was able to understand the significance of the lantern she was holding. It served as Blessed Domenica’s constant companion as she go out to care for the poor and lonely sick, the abandoned and the dying. In the dark alleys and streets, her lantern shone light on her path to those who are in need. There was this beautiful scene in her life wherein during one stormy night, on her way to visit a sick person, the light in her lantern was put out by the strong wind. It was very dark but she continued on her way. Her burning desire to serve Jesus in the person of the sick is greater than the darkness of the street. She managed to reach the place and attended to the sick person in spite of her being totally soaked because of the rain.
My dear fellow devotees and children of Blessed Maria Domenica, the readings we have on this 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time clearly paint before us the works on which Blessed Domenica dedicated her life in responding to the invitation of Jesus to be the salt and light of the earth. She too is inviting us, in our own capacity and as her children, to also respond to Jesus’ call. In our Baptism, we have received the light of Christ. Like Blessed Maria Domenica, we too carry in our hands a lantern and we are to go out to the world to shine that light in the roads we travel darkened by indifference to the cry of the poor, the suffering and the afflicted. There maybe times that our lantern may dim or it’s light put off because of weariness but like Blessed Maria Domenica we should not loose hope but may our hearts with burning desire to serve Jesus ignite again that lantern to light our way.
Let me end this reflection with the words of the priest said to us during the lighting of the candle in our baptism: “At your baptism you were given the flame of Jesus Christ. You are to walk always as a child of the light. May you keep the flame of faith alive in your heart. When the Lord comes, may you go out to meet him with all the saints in the heavenly kingdom.” May we be given the grace to be worthy on that day, with our lanterns well lit in our hands, to meet Jesus and Blessed Maria Domenica Brun Barbantini joyfully welcoming us in the heavenly realm. Amen!
